Gemilut Chasadim
In Judaism, acts of loving kindness are a fundamental social value. This is embodied in the phrase Gemilut Chasadim, which describes the mitzvot of doing, giving and helping without any expectation in return. The Silk Butterfly Project was conceptualised on the cornerstones of loving kindness, Chesed and Tzedakah.
In the process of remembering the young people whose lives were cut short by the Holocaust, we also honour the living by performing acts of loving kindness. In South Africa, we take cognisance of the many Jewish families that are facing economic hardship. The Silk Butterfly Project aims to raise funds not only for awareness initiatives to ensure that the children of the Holocaust are never forgotten, by succeeding generations, but also to perform the mitzvot of Chesed and Tzedakah to ensure that every boy and girl of Bar and Batmitzvah age is afforded the opportunity to celebrate this important milestone in memorable and meaningful ways.
